Loyal support from our friends
SET is a small, supporter-friendly charity. Many donors have been giving their support from the very beginning, sixteen years ago. Some have become good friends, visiting Thailand frequently and meeting some of the students they help support, as well as the teachers and welfare officers who voluntarily help SET in its work.

Although originally supported only by donors in the UK, SET now has supporters throughout the world. Other charities in the UK and USA offer support, as do some European companies with branches in Thailand. The British Chamber of Commerce in Thailand is a supporter, as is the British Community in Thailand Foundation for the Needy.

In 2002, a group of UK supporters formed a registered charity to enable other UK supporters to make donations conveniently and with minimal bank transfer charges. The charity is registered with the UK Charity Commission as the Students' Education Trust and can increase the value of supporters’ donations by 28 per cent, through the UK Gift Aid scheme. In 2004, another support charity - The Friends of SET-USA - was established in America.

Some supporters help SET by organizing their own fundraising events. Every year, UK schoolteacher Michael Pockley runs a marathon or undertakes a sponsored bike ride and has raised many thousands of pounds for SET. UK supporter David Johnston cycled from St Pauls in London to St Peters in Rome, also raising many thousands of pounds. Two long-haired medical students raised more than £1,000 by having their heads shaved. Privileged children at several international primary schools in Bangkok save their one-Baht coins and once a year lay them around the perimeter of the schools’ playing fields in a ‘Ring of Friendship’. The children have raised many thousands of Baht which SET uses to help poorer children at rural primary schools.

supporters Two sisters in the UK are SET's youngest supporters. Each year on their birthdays, Ellen and Eve ask their parents and friends to give money instead of presents. The girls donate the money to SET specifically to help needy Thai children of their own age. Ellen and Eve are the third generation of their family to support SET's students. Left, the sisters with SET's administration assistant, Sorasing. Sorasing is a former SET scholarship student and now has a teaching degree in Thai and a Master Degree in Education Quality Assurance.
